My Rembetika Blues Screening

Maliotis Cultural Center was proud to present a beautiful and inspiring evening last night, Tuesday, December 6, in a screening of the award-winning film “My Rembetika Blues” by Mary Zournazi for a Boston audience. It was accompanied by Q & A with the director and its constituents with a reception which followed the screening.

Hellenic College Holy Cross’ own Rev. Dr. Romanos Karanos explored the influence of Byzantine music on this twentieth-century cultural phenomenon. Fr. Romanos also introduced the filmmaker, Mary Zournazi, whose inspiration for the film was her own ancestor’s journey from Smyrna to Australia and the ways in which Rembetika (sometimes called Greek blues) was born out of such stories of migration and struggle.

We are so grateful for Ms. Zournazi as well as all who came out for this evening celebrating music and history through film.
