Greek Women from Antiquity to Now

Greek Women from Antiquity to Now

Maliotis Cultural Center was proud to present a one day mini conference, “Greek Women from Antiquity to Now” which showcased four incredible speakers, Dr. Stamatia Nova (PhD Harvard University and Professor of Classics at HCHC), Dr. Kiki Karaglou (former MET Curator in New York), Eleftheria Goufa (conservator and Cultural Manager), and finally, the artist himself, George Petrides (International Sculptor and Exhibit artist). The conference speakers presented on Hellenic women – mythological and historical figures alike and their influence on Greece. President Cantonis opened the evening remarking that, “It is not often that one can attend an exhibit of outstanding art and be able to hear the reflections and thoughts of highly educated commentators, but also be able to listen and meet the artist himself. We are honored to be able to present and exhibit your work, Mr. Petrides and that you have joined us this evening.”

The evening concluded with remarks by Mr. Petrides himself on his exhibit which is currently on display at Maliotis. The Hellenic Heads is an artistic dialogue between the past and present, elucidating the universal character of Greek culture and its fundamental role in shaping Greek identity. This traveling exhibition highlights the necessity of art and the importance of the creator in modern society and conveys intercultural dialogue through cultural diplomacy. Cultural diplomacy is key to the mutual understanding of other nations and their cultural heritage, as it examines human development through artistic creation.”

A beautiful reception followed where attendees, including the Consul General of Greece, Mr. Symeon Tegos as well as faculty, staff, and students of Hellenic College Holy Cross. Guests were able to mingle amongst the exhibit and meet the artist, Mr. Petrides. We are so grateful for this incredible evening and look forward to the many guests who can view the beautiful Hellenic Heads until the end of November here at the Cultural Center.
